Just a few of the answers we have received...

This year we're starting a new school discipleship ministry, working in secondary schools. Our long-term goal is to strengthen the existing Christian clubs in schools by training their teachers and student leaders, introducing discipleship materials, and creating lasting links with local churches that can continue to support them. But we're starting by sharing the Understanding True Love (UTL) course materials with two schools (Lagwai Seed Secondary School, a local government school; and Archbishop Flynn Secondary School, a local Catholic school). These materials are a series of 8 small books which talk about (among other things) a Biblical understanding of love; the difference between love, lust, and sexual attraction; sexually transmitted diseases; and what the Bible teaches about dating and marriage. Over the past two weeks I (Mike) have been training the teachers and student leaders in the core principles of the UTL course, and teaching them how to lead discussion groups. As part of this training we talk about worldview, and how our beliefs affect our behaviours and our behaviours lead to consequences. As a practical exercise we divided the teachers and students into groups and asked them this question: "What lies do our youth (and adults!) believe about sex, love, and relationships?" The answers they gave, which we have heard consistently across different groups, are a pretty good indication of why we think the UTL course is needed! Just a few of the answers we have received...
If these are the beliefs guiding the actions of our youth, what behaviours and consequences can we expect! There is so much brokenness among individuals, families, and in societies as a whole that is connected with this core idea of "What is love?" As the Understanding True Love course runs over the coming months, we pray that they youth will not only come to a better understanding of love in relationships, but also ultimately in the greatest love of all -- the love of God!
