On Saturday, we had a big storm. Earlier in the day, we had been on the road when Tom called us and told us to look up at the sun. This is what we saw. Then in the evening, around 6, very dark clouds were on the horizon. Soon the wind started blowing, and the rain started falling. The wind increased, until the rain was coming in sideways. It actually entered our second-storey window and flowed down the wall to the level below, flooding our bathroom. Rain was coming in other windows too, and we were busy mopping it up, with lightning flashing and thunder clapping all around. When it calmed down a bit, we opened the door and took in this scene (click here to see video for those following on email). As you can see in the video, the storm actually knocked down one of our big trees. It also blew down all the maize, though Patel tells us the maize will be okay. When we came back from church the next day, we noticed that our roof was a bit damaged as well. As Mike says, it looks a bit like our house has bed head. We're really, really thankful that our roof stayed on! I'm sure you'll be as relieved as Marianne is to know that our marigolds have perked back up!

It's that time again! Every 2 months, we publish a newsletter, highlighting the most important things from the last 2 months.
In this issue...another exciting door that has opened for us in participating in a pre-marriage training at Faith Mission church, and the answer to the question "What do you guys do, exactly?" Hope you enjoy! Last week we went with Rev. Patrick on a field visit to the CHE team members in Pajule. We went to a village called Bar-Goma. We heard an update from the team, who have faced lots of challenges and barriers to getting to the stage of having CHE Educators doing weekly home visits, but still lots of encouraging testimonies. One testimony that is close to our hearts is that Bar-Goma is yet another example of God using CHE to build friendships and partnerships between the different denominations in the village. Every Sunday evening, the CHE team selects a household and a small group, composed of CHE Committee members and Christians from various churches, go and share the Bible in that home. This little group is persisting. We pray it will grow! One of the CHE Committee members is called Charles. Charles is an elder in the village. At the end of the meeting, Charles invited us to come and see his field. He told us that it was CHE that inspired him to start this small agricultural project, because he realized that he is able to provide a balanced diet for his family. You can see sugar cane on the left, and then bananas behind the sugar cane, and then eggplants on the right, and cabbages in the right-hand plot behind. In addition to having vegetables readily available in the home to help diversify his family's diet, he can sell the extra crops for much better money than if he were only growing the staple foods, like maize and beans. All this he did based on what he learned in CHE, even though CHE does not have any agricultural inputs to give group members.
We love this story because it shows that CHE is slowly breaking through the belief of "There's nothing we can do", and helping some say, "Yes we can!" We pray this attitude will spread from people like Charles to their neighbours, and that communities will be set free from the bondage of dependency! |
