As for flowers, our Frangipani and Hibiscus are both still less than knee high but they're flowering beautifully none the less, and the Morning Glories under our kitchen window have been providing a daily display.
One of the things we miss here in Pader is flowers. There aren't many flower gardens here in the north of Uganda, so we (and especially Marianne) always enjoy going to gardens and green spaces whenever we travel. Why don't we plant some flowers and gardens of our own, you may ask? Well, our thumbs are not terribly green. We tried our hand at vegetable gardening, way back in April of 2012 (as you can see below), but sadly we mainly only have "before" pictures, not "after" pictures, because other than a few green peppers I'm afraid that we weren't the most successful... However, after some (modest) success last year with tree planting and a new vegetable garden (cucumbers, green beans, and carrots), we decided that this year was the year that we would finally get over our fears and do more with our yard! And so this year has been a year of many growing things. Not all of these are new, as you may observe, but this year we've been enjoying... ...mangoes and bananas from our own backyard! This year our two mango trees produced fruit for the first time, and we gorged ourselves on them for at least two months. And our bananas (which have always been somewhat slow growing) have produced three bunches of the small, sweet bananas so far this year. Truly, we've been blessed, for eating fruit fresh from the tree simply does not compare to buying them in a supermarket! As for flowers, our Frangipani and Hibiscus are both still less than knee high but they're flowering beautifully none the less, and the Morning Glories under our kitchen window have been providing a daily display. And when we came back from Kampala last week we stopped at a nursery to get some different flowers, shrubs, and trees to start garden beds around our home.` It has been a lot of fun to see the gardens coming together, and the flowers have been a nice way to brighten our home! Now the next challenge...keeping them all alive...
