Can these ladies ever dance! Have a look for yourselves!
After a 9.5 hour drive that began at 6:15 am (which included 1.5 hours of Marianne’s first African driving experience), we drove through the gates of the Pader Rehabilitation and Restoration Centre to the clapping and singing of a troupe of Acholi ladies and the warm handshakes of the Emmanuel International Uganda staff. We were immediately ushered into chairs that were set out for us on the veranda, and the ladies (who are part of a competitive dance group called by a name that roughly means “Peace is returning”) began a series of dances and songs for welcome and to demonstrate Acholi culture. And they didn’t keep all the dancing to themselves, but pulled up Tom and myself to join in the fun. We were presented with sodas and sat in the office to have a more formal introduction of the EIUganda staff: Richard, Francis, Doris, Millie, Patel, and Tibero. We then unloaded our things into the house, with the help of our new co-workers, and returned to see the ladies, who then decided to launch into a second performance, but this time inside to get out of the hot sun. Did we mention it’s hot here? Even as we write this, it’s nearly 11 pm and 30C in the house…gives you an idea of the daytime! Can these ladies ever dance! Have a look for yourselves! More to share about Pader soon!
